The Logicians started off innocently enough as a group of scholars and tech-priests some centuries ago, funded by several universities and wealthy private patrons of the sciences. In the year of 643.M41 they launched an expedition to System 49/20A. The planetary system did not contain any world capable of supporting human life, and thus was of little interest. However, one of the gas giants designated [[49/20A-06]] had several high-atmospheric refineries housing a small planetary population. There were also two moons, known as The Staff and Weyland’s Gate. The purpose of the expedition was to explore and map the ruins on the surface of the moon. Revicus Thade, a respected member of the Machine Cult, led the expedition. After several weeks the researches determined that the ruins were of Pre-Imperial origins and that they discovered a network of tunnels beneath the ruins. The team went deeper into the catacombs. Initial reports were that the catacombs went for miles, perhaps honeycombing the entire moon. Two weeks later a garbeled transmission was received from The Staff by the Adeptus Mechanicus. The content of the message has never been revealed, but the Adeptus Mechanicus quarantined the system.
After the quarantine order the Machine Cult decreed the Logicians in violation of the edicts of the Ommnisiah and arrested many of their members and seized their holdings. But several members of the Logicians escaped the wraith of the Machine God and went underground. Since then the Logicians have been branded a rogue tech-cult by both the Inquisition and the Adeptus Mechanicus.
The Logicians are an alliance of heretic factions who have long been a thorn in the side of the Calixis and the nearby Ixaniad Sectors. Founded not around a single charismatic figure or dark religion, they find their inspiration in a forbidden heretical text called “In Defence of the Future: A Logical Discourse”, banned now for several millennia. The Logicians are a so called “progressive” cult, they favor the advancement of mankind through progress and the acquisition of technology, believing that they should castoff of the oppression of the Ministorum, overthrow of the High Lords of Terra and put an end to the smothering constraints of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Ultimately, the Logicians aim to bring about a return to the mythic power of the Dark Age of Technology.
Finding adherents through a secret network of ruthless mercantile interests and power hungry nobles, they are a haven for hereteks and rogue techpriests, and are highly organised and well resourced. Although no Daemonic force or apocalyptic agenda lies at their heart, the Logicians are still a phenomenally dangerous group, utterly callous in their pursuit of power and unceasing in the hunt for ever better weapons and tools by which to achieve their ends.
